US to UK Shoe Size Converter

American and British shoe sizes are closely related: a US size runs one size larger than its UK label for men. Type either size and get every equivalent.

Tip: measuring your foot in cm or inches is the most accurate starting point — see how to measure. Conversions between named size systems are approximate by nature.

How this conversion works

The US system grew out of the UK system, which is why the offset is a clean single size for men: US 9 = UK 8. The systems share the same barleycorn (⅓ inch) grading, so US↔UK is the most reliable of the cross-system conversions.

Women's sizing adds a wrinkle: US women's sizes are commonly marked 1.5 sizes above the men's scale (the FIA scale uses 1). Our table follows the common retail convention and shows the UK equivalent through foot length.

Common questions

Is UK sizing the same as US sizing minus one?

For men's shoes, yes — UK = US men's − 1 holds across the standard scale. For women's shoes the offset lands differently because US women's sizing starts from a different baseline; convert through the tool instead of subtracting.

Are UK half sizes the same as US half sizes?

Both systems grade halves identically (⅙ inch), so a UK 8.5 converts to US 9.5 just like the whole sizes.

Do UK brands run narrower?

Many British makers cut a slightly narrower last than US brands, so fit can differ even when the number matches. The number conversion is reliable; the fit is a last-shape question.
